Matthew Specktors pick from the 1980s is Blue Velvet: I’m less ambivalent about this choice than about any other decade’s. I met David Lynch once, when I was a teenager. He was standing on a street in Beverly Hills feeding a parking meter, wearing pink pants with one short leg, one long. My dad stopped to talk with him a minute, and when I asked who that was, my father said, “He’s a guy who made a very strange movie.” At the time, Lynch had only made Eraserhead, for which I was too young, but let’s just say this encounter stayed with me in the future, when I watched The Elephant Man and then, as a college freshman, Blue Velvet. I felt like I was sprouting a third eye in the center of my forehead.
