In honor of the paperback release of Matthew Specktors American - TopicsExpress

In honor of the paperback release of Matthew Specktors American Dream Machine, we are running a film inspired giveaway on Facebook! Respond with your favorite movie from the 2000s and be entered to win a free paperback copy! Matthew Specktors pick from the 2000s is There Will Be Blood: Ah, the near-present. It’s my least favorite time frame, as the past decade has seen my enthusiasm for the movies wane like crazy. Michael Tolkin told me once he thought the reasons American studio movies are so shitty is because “we’ve run out of myths.” I don’t know that I agree with him, quite, but I do know even the ones I care about feel somewhat belated. And they tend to age quickly. (Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is still enjoyable, but it feels . . . quaint. Flimsy, somehow.) I’ll go with There Will Be Blood, which may not even quite be my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movie, but carries a certain weight, to say nothing of a certain energy and grotesquerie. I think of it as perhaps the last American movie Beau Rosenwald, at least, would understand.
