In lieu of Robin Williams passing, I feel this message is - TopicsExpress

In lieu of Robin Williams passing, I feel this message is appropriate (although it is always appropriate, really, because depression didnt just start, its been ongoing since we began) - I am avidly a person who supports those suffering from depression. I am always willing to lend a listening ear, a hug, a trip to your house at 3am because you just dont see the point anymore- I am here for you, and do not hesitate to ask me for help. However, people who are supporting those suffering from depression, whether they are helping a family member, a close friend, or even a stranger cope- need help too. I do not suffer from depression. I cannot begin to imagine what it feels like to have terrible thoughts in your head telling you to end your life. I am able to get out of bed in the morning, and for this I am thankful. But please be conscious of how you treat me if you are suffering from depression- I am not your crutch. Please do not take advantage of me. Because if there is one thing I do know, is that usually I feel like I am not good enough just like you do. My reasoning for this, however, is because sometimes I do not know what to say to help you, and it hurts. I am positive there is no one out there that wants to see someone they love or are close to commit suicide- but remember we are scared. Sometimes people telling others to suck it up is not because they dont care, but because they dont know what to say. (Even though I would never say that) Not everyone is comfortable in those situations, no matter how much you may want them to be. If you need help, seek help. I will aid you in getting that help without any hesitation. Basically, I am just saying both parties need to be conscious of one another. If you are uncomfortable with how to deal with someones depression, dont resort to anger- let them know, and guide them to find someone they can talk to. And if you are suffering from depression, be aware of others feelings, too. There are those with the emotional ability to help you, and those who cannot. Depression IS a disease- One many, many people in my life have/are suffering from, and those of us who dont suffer need to help in any way that we can, even a hug or a smile will do.
