In light of a comment I received yesterday towards Naconi, though I did not answer that post,I felt I needed to say something. This is it. so here is my view point on saving animals. I have been for a few years here in Colorado saving cats/kittens,often found on the streets in awful conditions...from severe eye infections to malnutrition. This is not my 1st rodeo in saving cats/kittens;I did this before with my late husband. We rescued kittens dumped off, wandering the streets,by the train tracks....We even saved a 4 week old kitten a victim of firecracker abuse, ignited, burning off his tail and impact injuries, forcing that tiny kitten to drag himself around. I also rescue dogs; Thumper a Puppy Mill Survivor,I am sure you do not need more info on how Puppy Mill life is. Mattie rescued from a back yard online breeder that thought only of the money, but not the welfare of that animal. On the day we thought we were going to a reputable place,we saw in the dead of winter in Western PA,14 discarded unknown small breed misfits,as they were dubbed, the result of bad breeding to make designer breeds.Inside was Mattie, inside a tiny carrier stinking to high heaven from laying in her own feces....if that was her only problem we would have thought us lucky, instead, she could not stand, never having a chance to stand up in the crate...add to that the need to eat her own feces and drink her urine,I am sure you can figure out why. We have Magie, cast into the yard, regardless of weather and already baring a brood before she was 6 months old....clearly the babies were either taken away or eaten because of her behavior with young babies, any young kitten or pup here she thinks is her baby and will keep everyone away from them. Food also is an issue for her,she thinks all food is hers, beyond your typical piggy syndrome, but more like a horder. Take Bella, posted online as a mini doxie at 10 pounds on a freecycle ad,what we found was a dog perhaps a mere 4 pounds, one was able to count her ribs, the bones in her tail see her spine sticking out....and if this was her only issue, again,we were lucky, but she has a fear to hands, and as neurotic as they come. We lucked out with the small Chihuahua, ChiChi Noel we got,but her 2 siblings from another birthing 5 months later gave us Kodiak and Twila and that was a bit different. No one wanted the mother while pregnant after her human passed away leaving 3 dogs alone till they were discovered.. we held the dogs till family members came forward or a home found for the 3 ...Momma went to the family only to be returned to us 4 days later under the claim, she whined too much.We took her in,nurtured her, waited for her to give birth and wean the babies, waited till of age to spay/neuter the babies and mom and finding 2 of the babies and mom a home,BTW..she never whined once and not even in her forever home...Anyhow two puppies remained with us,no one wanted the boy, Kodiak and as time went by we nearly lost the girl,Twila to parvo-though she had her shots, but we rallied by her side and pulled her through. And then there is Naconi...a dog that suffered unknown hardship, paralysis, starvation abuse and neglect.....While we never claimed to be pros at treating a disabled dog,we did none-the-less learn as we went along. From having to catheter him twice daily, diapering him to having to address wounds from the streets,to helping work the legs, massage the back,to having him trust us,to help him over come fears or the notion he has to scavenge for food..we did and saw all.... These animals are not just furs, but our fur kids...each day gives us a different adventure and at times a new learning experience. We will do everything in our power to ensure their welfare and happiness, always going that extra mile.
