In light of a common theme on my Facebook feed recently, Id like to offer some thoughts for people who find themselves in a state of shock over recent or future incidents of police brutality. First, drop the anger. It accomplishes nothing. Youre not helping the victims, youre not helping the situation, and youre not hindering the police. Youre only hurting yourself by poisoning your own mind. Duality has many labels: good vs. evil, light vs. dark, right vs. wrong. You have your own favorite words, right? Try replacing them with this: love vs. fear. Thats what everything boils down to. All the evil that we perceive is driven by fear. Police brutality is driven by fear. Violent reactions to this brutality are fueled by fear. The more fearful the police become, the more rationale they give themselves for escalating violence. The cycle feeds into itself, and it gets stronger on both sides. Rise above it. Videotape police action. Keep sharing videos and articles on social media. Expose the truth. Know your rights, speak out, peacefully protest, and work toward political change. But dont give in to fear! Your emotions are precious; dont let anyone else control them. If you have to interact with police, be polite and respectful, smile, and never volunteer any information. Be silent, but with your eyes, try to communicate that you love them -- not as a militarized arm of an oppressive regime, but as a fellow human being on planet Earth in a difficult situation, whos just trying to make it through the day. Were all in this together. ALL of us. Even the people in SWAT gear and tanks. Unity is our reality, and separation is our illusion.
