In many ways, our suffering, more than half a century after colonization, is self-inflicted. The comforts of civilization are meant to serve, make life more bearable, not own and make people weak and become easy prey for the merciless dictates of the free market. Our insatiable taste/preference for the fanciful trimmings of manufactured (imported) goods over some of the perfect substitutes in our roots and culture is one of the major stumbling blocks in the way of our progress. There is still a lot of work to be done in many aspects of our daily lives, in terms of DECOLONIZING THE MIND! And I wonder if that process really ever started and played an important role in formal education. Most probably, our formal system of education with its focus on learning to pass examinations and meeting the requirements of the job-market prevents exactly that - creating space for a hundred flowers to bloom, as Kenyan writer Ngugi Wa Thiongo would state the alternative to our mental blindness cum deafness, and the legend, The Right Honorable Robert Nesta Marley sings it in a song; ...emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds...! Cry the beloved people!
