In my capacity as a principal Resource Person & Focal Point for UNCSD Rio+20 Libya National Report on Future We Want I compliment NGO Lawyers for Justice in Libya (LFJL) for rightly taking up, promoting and supporting the gender mainstreaming issue in Libya. Indeed this is one of the main component of the report that Libya pledged to UN General assembly to implement. UNCSD focal point urges Congress to exercise justice by giving an equal participation on the 60-member Constitutional Commission for women and ethnic minorities. We consider the decision for allocation of barely 6 seats as discriminatory. Therefore, UNCSD Rio+20 Focal point hereby strongly urges GNC to review the allocation of six seats for women who represent 49 percent of the population. Libya must meet its obligation to world community for giving fair representation to women & minorities. Surely the measures outlined in the Election Law to fulfill the quota do have & will have negative impacts on women’s participation and our peace keeping, peacemaking and peace building initiatives in Libya.
