In my day, the question for parents was Do you know where your kids are? Today one should ask, Do you know what your kids are doing, even posting? Parents are legally responsible for their childrens behavior. Some parents I talk to are surprised to discover this. It is the parents responsibility to train their children. Computers are not good baby sitters. Ive talked to some parents who feel it would be an invasion of their childs privacy to monitor their texting and online posting. Ridiculous! If youre not monitoring childrens online activity, how can you protect them from predators that proliferate online forums? Take note. The Georgia court of appeals upholds a decision by a lower court that parents ARE responsible for their minor childs online activities. Oh, you say they wont give you the password? Or they will rebel if you restrict their access? Who pays the bill? Im amazed at the parents I encounter on a daily basis who complain, But I cant control what they post from their phones as the child sits next to the parent in my office texting. My response, And why do they still have a phone or active service on any device. Be responsible. Teach your children responsibility. Privacy has its limits and its best for children to learn this from their parents rather than law enforcement.
