In my humble opinion within the health industry(s) both consumer protection and advocacy should be based around science literacy and advocacy. I believe that with the understanding of the spirit of science and the ability to apply this understanding to our everyday life, we gain a great strength. We begin to develop the ability to understand how to think, rather then what to think. Once we stop looking at content, conclusions and outcomes, and start to look at methods [theory of knowledge or epistemology]...we gain great strength in our own protection. Nobody provides our doctrine, for we cannot be swayed by simple declarations of truth, but demand empirical evidence and/or if that cannot be provided, logical consistency. If you believe in your right as a consumer to be protected, then start to become literate in science and understand the spirit of the scientific method. “Weve arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.” - Carl Sagan
