In my ongoing research about our health and environmental exposures I have just discovered something disturbing that I think youll want to know. Some household cleaning product companies -- most disturbingly, even ECOVER!!! are turning to a genetically modified algae, made using biofuel technology, to replace the increasingly unsustainable use of palm kernel oil. The techniques coax bacteria, fungi and other organisms into producing substances they do not naturally produce, and this practice is completely unregulated. This is not what I want on my dishes or on/in my body! Even more frightening, because it is an algae, they are able to call it natural and have been reluctant to disclose the use of this method/ingredient. It appears this technology is used in more than just soap -- it is used in rennet for cheese and in some cosmetic oils. Here is the article.
