In my opinion, American Democracy has always been rigged. The slave-owning Founders wrote about freedom and equality while reducing their slaves (who obviously couldnt vote) to 3/5ths. of a human being. The truth is that America is actually a Republic not a Democracy (Look it up). The Electoral College controls the way votes are distributed to determine who wins presidential elections. As such, elections are decided by the Electoral College and not always by who gets the most votes. Even without restrictive voter laws the idea of a true democracy is more myth than reality. Lobbyists are the de facto, unelected fourth branch of government representing corporations and deep pocketed Special Interests. Citizens United (Unlimited dark money defined as free speech) and the lobbyists who all but control members of congress, have made a mockery of your vote. The push to control which Americans get to vote probably wont end with minorities or disfavored social groups. If left to run its course, voting could revert back to landowners only (As many hardcore conservatives have implied). It comes as no surprise that the ideals of freedom, equality and the privileges of full citizenship thereof were only meant for the upper classes of a specific pedigree. The Divine Right of Kings was derived from the idea that the Monarchy was equal to God. When the founders reasoned that all men were equal, it was to justify rebelling against the Monarchy and God (The separation of Church and State). It was never intended to be applied universally; hence the dawn of American hypocrisy. The ideals of freedom, equality and the pursuit of happiness has since been adopted to include everyone. Yet, the savagery of Western Civilization continues to manifest as war, misogyny, racism and classism. The ultimate question is who benefits? When this question is applied to the sociopolitical, religious and economic issues de jour, it isnt difficult to discover that the power and influence of money is a causal factor.
