Why Nome Dog Bagels? Dr. Curtis Welch’s telegram broke the news: “NOME ALASKA JANUARY 22, 1925. . .AN EPIDEMIC OF DIPHTHERIA IS ALMOST INEVITABLE HERE STOP I AM IN URGENT NEED OF ONE MILLION UNITS OF DIPHTHERIA ANTITOXIN STOP MAIL IS ONLY FORM OF TRANSPORTATION STOP. . .” Alaska Territory Governor Scott C. Bone knew that a recently located batch of antitoxin serum could save the 3,000 residents of the Seward Peninsula. If he could get it there. In time. As death closed in on the quarantined town of Nome, so did twenty relay teams of sled dogs and volunteer drivers with their life-saving cargo. Between the nearest railroad line at Nenana in the Alaska Interior and the desperate town of Nome on the eastern edge of the Bering Sea, the dogs and their drivers would have to brave 674 miles of treacherous winter conditions: black hole water, overflow, and ice fog on the frozen Tanana, Koyukuk, Yukon and Topkok rivers, temperatures that dropped to 62 degrees below zero, blizzards and whiteouts that reduced visibility to inches on exposed mountain ridges, hurricane-force gusts that threw the teams off the trail, and blind travel in the pitch darkness of night over the cracking, separating sea ice covering Norton Sound. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer called it a “Race With Death”. On February 2, 1925 at 5:30 AM, the sled dogs and their drivers won the race and saved the town. Inspired by these heroic teams of dogs and men, we created Nome Dog Bagels to share mouth-watering bagels with new and old friends and to donate 10% of our retail sales to local programs serving children, service animals, and animal shelters. Nome Dog Bagels. For the heroes in your life. TM.
