“In one of the orphanages where we distributed boxes, the little children met us with a greeting. Each of them wanted to recite a poem. They tried their best and it was impossible to watch them without tears. When it came to opening the gifts the room was filled with noise similar to bees buzzing. The children were so amazed at what they found in their boxes, examining things that were unknown to them, and bursting with childlike glee. Lunch and their afternoon naps were forgotten. It seemed like we all found ourselves in a fairy tale, or some fantastic world filled with extraordinary toys, sweets and things. They held on to their boxes as if they were afraid the fairy tale would end and everything would return to its previous state. The orphanage workers told us that these children never had such gifts in their lives. This was truly a holiday for them. We, ourselves, couldn’t take our eyes off of these children. It was so joyful to see their faces full of surprise and excitement, holding tightly onto the boxes.” - OCC Volunteer in Russia
