In one of those humdrum mondays after the lovely sunday before, I was sitting in a queue of traffic on a road I travel along every day. I idly glanced in the rear view mirror and noticed a policeman on a pushbike pedalling quite enthusiastically about 50 yards behind. The traffic was stop/start and noticing he was gaining on me I started to take an interest. I wasn`t drunk, all in and on Harry was legal and in good order so I had nothing to worry about.. As he was now quite close, I saw he was no spring chicken, around 50 maybe, and suffering a little from his exertions being red faced and breathing hard. He was now right behind me, overtaking the queue of traffic slowly but steadily, and I saw a fixed steely determination on his face as he overtook, pedalling furiously, legs going like pistons. He persisted, and continued in this breakneck fashion until he reached a red van about 10 cars up from me. He stopped, knocked the van`s window and motioned the driver to pull over onto the wide pavement. As I drew level, he`d got his bike on the pavement too, and was trying to regain his breath. I looked at the van, and noticed its tax disc was due in July...the policeman had noticed it too, and had given chase - on his bike. He saw me looking, and in one of those golden moments where you catch someone in authority off guard, I grinned, shook my head in disbelief and clapped him. He risked a glance at the caught red handed driver who was looking heavenward at being pulled by the police on a pushbike, looked back at me and grinned too. Moreover, he held his heart, did an ott breathing hard act and bowed in my direction. Total respect to him, priceless, and true.
