In or around 2010/2011 the National Guards evacuated all of the NYS Armories; including the one located on Babylon Turnpike, Freeport. Since that time, the following events took place: In 2011, Riverhead wasted no time and had their local legislators sponsor turning ownership of the Armory to the town. Cuomo gave it to them on 9/2/11. Their Town Supervisor said, it was “an enormous feather in Riverhead’s cap.” In 2012, Huntington was taking final steps to transfer ownership and control of their armory. They planned to re-name it after Assemblyman Conte who had died from cancer. This will be Contes namesake because he was the one that sponsored the bill to give the town control of the armory after the operations of National Guard units left. In 2012, the town of Brookhaven had already secured the Armory, and their Senator sponsored a bill to extend the time to take possession up to three years so they had time to complete analysis before the final transfer. These towns have been extremely active in pursuing the Armory. Its 2014 and Freeport still hasnt secured the Armory. So I ask - what has Freeport done? I know that many residents were successful in STOPPING Assemblywoman Hooper - but what has the Freeport board done to SECURE the Armory? People need to start examining this because Gov. Cuomo is going to ask that very question when this bill is placed in front of him again. And if he signs it - whos fault will it be when theres an at-risk youth/homeless shelter is in Freeport for people in neighboring towns? Somehow, I dont think three signatures to a mysterious petition in the Mayors office is going to cut it.
