In order to understand the Bible rightly, we need to ask ourselves, How is it understood by the oppressed? As people of privilege, we can so easily miss its deeper meanings. When Hispanics read the Scriptures, for many of them it addresses issues of poverty, justice, and what it means to be an outcast. They see the Bible as the story of Jesus standing in solidarity with the poor and suffering of the world. It is not our place to tell them they are reading the Bible incorrectly. Doing so only betrays how much we are blinded by privilege.
