In our November 2014 special issue, “Legacies of 1914,” Glenda Sluga, a professor of international history at the University of Sydney, explains how World War I accelerated a worldwide movement for international cooperation that led to the League of Nations, and eventually to the United Nations. Yet she also shows how internationalism was always constrained by the competing force of nationalism. Nonetheless, Sluga says, “Remembering the place of internationalism in the evolution of political, economic, social, and cultural modernity maps out a new way of thinking about the twentieth century overall.” Her essay, “Rediscovering Internationalism,” in now available in print, on Amazon for Kindle, and (for subscribers) on our website at currenthistory/Article.php?ID=1181
