In our society of instant gratification, we simply cannot wrap our minds around the fact that the Christian walk is a process, and a long one, at that. The idea of our becoming an instant Christian is pure fallacy. Sure when we are saved, yes it is instantaneous, but that is simply the beginning. There isnt a powder that we can add water to and voila! Instant Christian. It simply doesnt work that way. The instantaneousness, (is that a word? It is now lol) stops there. This is when God rolls up His Sleeves and His saving work begins. Faith can be likened to cooking, in a way. There are those who want everything fast, with no thought to what its going to taste like as long as its hot and fast. For our own purposes, we will call this microwave faith. Dont get me wrong, I have no problem with microwaves, per se. They do serve a purpose, especially in a time crunch. But microwave faith is not the kind of faith we should be seeking. Sure it heats up fast, but cools down just as quickly, rendering us cold in our faith, or worse, lukewarm. Yuck. Not hot, not cold, somewhere in between, which is precisely where a Christian does NOT want to find him or herself. And neither does the Lord. I think we know what Jesus plans to do with those lukewarm Christians but for those who dont, Jesus tells us in Revelation 3:15-16 I know your record of your works and what you are doing; you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth. Not a pretty picture. Sorry for the graphic description this early in the morning but... On the other hand, something that is cooked in a crock pot or any slow cooker, now that is another story. The slow cooking allows flavors to mingle, makes the entire meal much more flavorful and enjoyable. Yummers. This is why the Christian would do much better to have a slow-cooker faith. Wouldnt you rather let God work in His good timing and let the bitter and the sweet experiences mingle and the slow process of learning make our faith that much richer? Ahhh now thats more like it! When something is cooking all day in a slow cooker, the smells from the cooking food just permeate the kitchen, what a wonderful, inviting way to be greeted. Just like His sweet aroma permeates our souls the longer we walk with Him. Anyone getting hungry for more of Him yet? He offers us a sumptuous feast in the form of His Word. And we can feel free to indulge at any time! Before we partake, we must ask the Holy Spirit to show us what He wants us to know, and ask Him to season our meal with wisdom and discernment. Then we are free to partake all we want! Trust me, the more you get, the more you are going to want. Why are we in such a rush to finish the Christian walk? God isnt. To Him a day is as a thousand years and vice versa. Shouldnt we rather just take in the sights and enjoy the journey and then walk into the kitchen to find ourselves surrounded by that lovely aroma of slow-cooking faith? That is what awaits us, you know. Psalm 27:14 sums it up nicely~Wait and hope for the Lord; be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring. Yes, wait and hope for and expect the Lord. ~God loves you and so do I~
