In our vernacular, the phrase, “Take up your cross,” has come to mean, “Carry your burden.” Sayings like, We all have a cross we must bear support this idea. But if you look at the context of Matthew 16:24, take up your cross is Jesus calling for His followers to be willing to sacrifice our lives and live completely for Him. Its a recognition that following Jesus may involve – should involve – personal sacrifice for the Kingdom of God. How do we communicate this truth to our children who live in a culture of freedom and plenty? There is very little in American Christianity that challenges Christian youth to consider ways of laying their lives down for God.
