In past posts I have alluded to missed messages in the media which make not mention of the two or three speed rural economy and people tend to think it is a one size fits all economy. If the wool sector is going good - everyone else flies with it! This weeks edition of The Land is atypical of this. Page One New Year Revival for crops, markets, morale. Page 3 (P2 is an ad) Cattles New Year Bounce talking about the significant price kick for cattle. The other lead on P2 Walchas overnight revival. P5 (P4 is an ad) talks about the fall in the Aussie dollar benefitting traders in Aussie grain futures. P6 Handy storms splash the state. No, by my reading of this weeks Land lead stories everything is just fine and the world is rosy in rural and regional NSW. Couple those stories with the recent spate of multi million dollar Chinese buyouts and large land holdings changing hands for big $$$$ and I cant see a reason in the world why anyone living in the bush is doing it tough!!! The metro media is worse. It is the bush is awash with foreign investment dollars and every now and then they have to acknowledge a nightmare drought or fire. Thats fixed by Woolies chucking in and an appeal is run by a paper to let everyone know it is all under control. I do see however on weather.au that the NW is slated in for some decent rain this coming week - gosh next weeks Land will be like getting a Christmas card!
