In psychiatric nursing, where a patient may become violent there is always the permitted algorithm of escalating restraint use. One can use their professional judgement to forcefully take a patient down & employ 4 point restraint, use chemical restraints per injections etc. but this should always be the LAST resort not the FIRST choice that comes to mind. I stepped between a psychiatric patient in distress & their agitator numerous times & saved them from this fate. Im sad to say that many people are attracted to psychiatric nursing in the same way that many are attracted to Law Enforcement. There are those few bad apples who abuse their power.
