In recent weeks, there have been many developments in Israel and Gaza. Here is a brief summary of events that led up to the current situation: - 3 Israeli teenage boys were kidnapped in Gush Etzion - 18 days later, the IDF discovered that these 3 boys were murdered by Hamas terrorists. The kidnapping and murder was celebrated in Gaza and Palestinian Authority territories. -Out of revenge, a Jewish extremist murdered an innocent Arab boy in eastern Jerusalem. -Hamas began firing rockets towards Israels biggest cities. Since this round of violence began, Hamas fired over 1,000 rockets into cities like Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Sderot, Ashkelon, Rishon Lishon, and many more. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted the most threatening missile attacks. -In order to stop these hundreds of rockets aimed at Israeli civilians, Israel began Operation Protective Edge. The operation aims at weakening Hamas leadership and infrastructure in order to protect Israeli civilians. -Israel began targeted air strikes to take out Hamas terrorists and weaken the organizations capabilities. -Thursday evening, IDF soldiers entered into Gaza by foot. Hamas terrorists hide underground and among civilians in order to protect themselves from Israeli targeted attacks. The only way to take out these terrorists is through a ground operation. -Since the beginning of the operation, Hamas killed 18 Israeli soldiers--13 on Sunday alone. There have also been many innocent Palestinian civilian deaths. This however is largely because Hamas uses civilians as human shields (a war crime under international law). All casualties are tragic, but Hamas, not Israel, is responsible for the number of deaths in Gaza. -Sec. of State John Kerry is now traveling to Cairo to broker a Hamas-Israel ceasefire deal.
