In response to a recent post, please read the following, Thank You, Philip Davies (Practice Principle) Why does Frontline Combo seem not to work? Is there a resistance problem that vets are hiding from their clients? Resistance to modern flea control products such as fipronil has not been documented in the field anywhere in the world. Insecticide resistance can only develop in individual insects with pre-existing genes for resistance, selected under insecticide pressure. A number of factors affecting the flea dynamic do not favour the development of resistance: • a reservoir of susceptible genes – a large proportion of fleas live on untreated animals (e.g. stray cats, rodents and wildlife) and are never exposed to the insecticide • low selection pressure – with the wide array of flea control products available, fleas on animals within a particular area are likely to be exposed to a variety of insecticides. Furthermore, the incorporation of an insect growth regulator (S-methoprene) in FRONTLINE Combo prevents the development of flea eggs, larvae and pupae and stops resistance characteristics being passed on to the next generation of fleas. Why can fleas be seen on pets that are on effective flea control products? There is NO product on the market that effectively repels fleas or kills fleas instantly. ALL flea control products require a period of time to kill fleas that jump onto treated pets. The environment can be a constant source of new fleas. Once on the treated pet, these fleas will be killed either by contact or ingestion of product, but they will be visible for some time between arriving on the pet and being killed by the product. If our clients are having problems controlling parasites on their pets then we offer a FREE OF CHARGE consultation where we can confirm what the problem is and what appropriate methods and products should be used in order to sort it out. It has never been our intention to sell or use a product that has been shown conclusively to be ineffective. Please please contact us if are experiencing problems with fleas as we are here to help. Take advantage of the Free-of-Charge Flea/Worming health checks we offer.
