In response to an ABQ Urinal Op-Ed: Original Doc: abqjournal/425513/opinion/nm-on-the-right-track-with-bonuses.html MY RESPONSE: I am amazed that Mr. Gephart has taught 15 years and has yet to see anything crazier than Mr. Hahn refusing bonus pay. He is truly blessed to have had such a rosy career. I have taught eight years at a school with 326% more poverty, 285% more students with disabilities, where 34.2% of my students are English Language Learners to Mr. Gepharts 0% and 21.17% are bilingual compared to his schools 0%. Out of the thousand kids I work with every year, 35% live in incredibly difficult trailer parks, 15% are effectively homeless, and many lack the necessary papers to avoid living in constant fear for their families. This is frustrating for me and the many other nurturing educators at my school. I guess, however, Im still insulted: I am insulted that I have had to counsel two 11-year-old girls about their pregnancies (total of 8 overall). I am insulted when I help a 12-year-old get professional assistance to kick her heroin habit. I am insulted when a student in my class mimes a masturbatory gesture above another students lap...and I cant get the first student the therapy he clearly needs. I am insulted that my students panic at the end of the week because they wont eat until school resumes. I guess I dont have time to be insulted at a teacher rejecting pay and the media coverage on the Tee-Vee because Im too busy failing the students at my F school...to begin to care. #RealityCheck
