In response to this photo from The Independent (ow.ly/v7BGH), Kate Byard makes a very salient point: Whoa, so many kneejerk reactions. Its a sociology class, theyll be talking about issues of intersectional theory, looking at race, class and gender as well as taking a feminist critique of media - given that media and pop culture tends to hold up a mirror to societal thought and values I think this course holds more weight than its being given. Its not a fanclub of Cyrus, its a a critical reflection of her *real life* influence on *real* society. Shes a celebrity and her media and words are sending out messages, the same way famous poets (celebrities of their time) sent out moral/politcal messages. Its important to reflect. Ive seen a lot of comments about people being moronic and brain dead, but actually, reflecting on the images and messages we are sent every day from every angle is a very important thing to do, and actually the very opposite of passive consumerism. Good point, well made Kate https://facebook/katie.byard/posts/10152276936882559?stream_ref=1
