In reviewing my spelling I just ran across a curiosity of English/American spelling, and sometimes pronunciation. Instead of the prefix "im-", which is used for words beginning in "m", "b", or "p", the spelling is "in-" for all other letters.. Sounds like an easy hard and fast rule, until you pick around and find some puzzlers: e.g. "insane" cannot be "unsane" but "unsure" excludes "insure". Why then do we refuse the use of "un-" on some words, but make use of it to distinguish different meanings on others? As you will find also that most words spelled with the "in-" can also be spelled with the "en-" prefix. Trivia.
