In sound design, you need to resolve potential issues as soon as possible in the processing chain, otherwise their effect will multiply and prevent you from obtaining the best result possible. A couple of examples, frequency peaks/unbalances and audio artifacts (noises, clicks, hum, aliasing, etc..), can become more present when you start compressing, adding reverbs/dly, modulations, etc.., and the pain of removing them later might not be worth, because sometimes the repair process can ruin the sound more than improving it.
