In spite of Scripture’s depth and sufficiency, many are compelled to modify, augment, and adjust God’s Word to their liking. Some suggest that contemporary science has enhanced our knowledge to the degree that certain aspects of Scripture no longer apply. Newly found facts are considered fresh and useful for life. But Solomon lamented: All things are wearisome; Man is not able to tell it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor is the ear filled with hearing. That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, “See this, it is new”? Already it has existed for ages Which were before us (Ecc 1:8-10). Here King Solomon challenges the wisdom of humans who reject the truth that “has existed for ages” and chase after something “new.” Humans pursue alternatives to truth because they are not satisfied with what they see and hear. But alas, the king cries, “…there is nothing new under the sun.” (Excerpt taken from Why Biblical Counseling by Ab Abercrombie, to be released 2014).
