In submerged Srinagar Normal life remains paralysed Bilal Kuchay SRINAGAR: For the 17th consecutive day, life in many parts of the summer capital Srinagar remained paralysed as parts of city continue to remain submerged. More than two weeks have passed since the devastating floods hit the Kashmir Valley but due to the administrative lapses many areas like Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Mehjoor Nagar, Bemina, Batamaloo, Qamarwari, Raj Bagh, Barbarshah and many others continue to remain submerged. The public inconvenience has increased as government has failed to dewater many important roads in the Srinagar city and in its outskirts. Residency Road, M.A. Road, Boulevard and Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh Road are still under water. As the water level in the commercial hub Lal Chowk has gone down to knee level and traders are busy in cleaning their business establishments and shops, state government is still nowhere in the area to at least dewater the important Residency Road, where vehicular movement continues to be restricted. Residency Road is still under water due to which we are not able to quickly clean our business units and shops, Suhail Ahmad Dar, who runs a shop in Lal Chowk. The story is even worse on the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh route where water level from Flyover to Iqbal Park restricts people to move by foot. Traffic movement though takes place on this route but vehicles have to go through big pits and have to even cross road divider at few places which at many instances prove problematic. When we have to cross the divider, there remains every chance for a vehicle to get stuck in the muddy water. In past few days, many vehicles got stuck on this route, said a mini-bus driver. In Bemina, Batamaloo and Tengpora areas, people in past few days had came on streets and protested against the government for not dewatering their localities on immediate basis. People in Bemina area of Srinagar Monday blocked the Srinagar-Baramula National Highway and protested against the Omar Abdullah led coalition Government. For atleast half an hour, traffic movement remained stranded on the Highway. The residents of the area demanded immediate dewatering of their area. The civil administration was missing when the floods hit the Valley and continues to be missing even after the floods, the protestors said. The devastating floods which hit the state left around 300 people dead, made half a million homeless and damaged property worth to thousands of crores.
