In the 1920s many libraries throughout the world took the extreme measures of removing dictionaries and encyclopaedias from shelves to protect them from not only being worn out from over use, but to also prevent visitors from fighting over these common reference books. What on earth was going on? Crosswords, that’s what! While a worldwide crossword epidemic is a little unfathomable now, it was a reality in the 1920s. The Library is lucky enough to have some of these original items in our Rare book collection.
