In the 60s Miles Davis had a group (1965-67) many consider his best. They sold the least records and worked lesser in USA than any group he ever had in any decade! Why? Because of Wayne Shorters compositions! Herbie Hancock said no one would ever cover them except Miles on a 1969 (liner notes) Wayne album called Super Nova. Herbie and Wayne mention they had 3 rehearsals the six respective years they played with Miles and not one argument . The records from that period are considered masterpieces Miles always made good or classic records) . On a tune written by drummer Tony Williams (who wasin his late teens) Pee Wee saxman Wayne was featured and Miles did not play a note! On Waynes Nefertiti the horns did not improvise but the drummer did the whole tune! Today everybody plays Waynes Footprints. I played in a jazz/blues group 19 yrs , we had 3 rehearsals! Played 2 free strawberry festivals, maybe a free jazz picnic and helped the keyboard guy out for a family reunion. During that period I sat in (free)maybe 3 to 5 times a paid gig more in the 80s than the 90s even though I built a house (3 yrs), raised a son and worked swing shifts. Thats what happen when folks SHARE. LOL In the 70s when I played in funk groups I rarely got paid a cent, so much for commercial music When I played dance music I got even less! Only when I learned hundreds of melodies, standards, blues, ethnic, different keys/tonalities (that means jazz)was I offered WORK LOL. In high school a jazz group leader offered me work on bass and I was not a jazz musician! A most christian man got me anything I needed to minister for the lord on bass, I am a christian who became a musician not the OTHER WAY AROUND. Such is the life of a HORNMAN IN THE ROCK AND ROLL GENERATION!
