In the American Sports Cycle, baseball is king of the summer months. The football players are just reporting to camp to get ready for the fall start. The basketball and hockey teams are still a few months away from their seasons. Colleges are out for the summer, so football and basketball is not on the horizon. While the major golf and tennis tournaments taking place in the summer do draw an audience, they are not sustained over many months. So what is happening in baseball? The All Star Game was just held in New York City, showcasing the new Citi Field Ballpark of the New York Mets, as well as the top players in the game. A farewell salute to the New York Yankees ace reliever Mariano Rivera was a highlight of the game. The pennant races are in full swing with the additional wild card game added last year becoming a factor in maintaining the excitement of a close race. How are the races matching up? The Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and Oakland A’s have slim leads in their divisions in the American League, while the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers have less than two game leads in their divisions in the National League. Only the Atlanta Braves in the National League with a seven game lead has pulled apart from their competition. The leading wild card teams are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baltimore Orioles in the American League and the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds in the National League. While the beginning of the pennant race in September will compete with the start of college and professional football, an exciting September can keep fans maintaining their interest in baseball.
