*** In the Beginning *** Almost from the very beginning, Christians referred to the Church as the One, Holy, Apostolic Church. A number of “Christian Churches” make claims that it is today the continuation and preservation of that same original Church. The Orthodox Church, the Coptic Orthodox, the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Catholics, the Anglican Communion, the Assyrian Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches, all profess to be THE CHURCH from which it can trace its footprints to the Apostles. Admittedly, they all do hold “similar” beliefs yet none totally agree with the other. Nevertheless, we can look at what each taught and believed thus we can go ‘back to the future’ and get an idea of what was being taught in their day. From almost the birth of “the Church”, She has had Her problems and Schisms. Trying to trace Her footsteps to the Apostles isn’t as easy as some claim. From my own study, it seems Coptic Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox date back nearest to the Apostles. Although, as I stated, these groups were not totally united, they did share common beliefs. Worth noting is the fact that they somehow had common beliefs without a bible. Sure, there were a few letters in circulation but nowhere close to what we have today. This begs the question. How did the early Church reach such common beliefs? Moreover, the beliefs THEY held / hold in similarity are not widely accepted today by most “Christian Churches”.
