In the Damascus Church History is the name Rev. S. J. Havard (Steven James) listed as preacher there. Story says he rode horse back from the Weaver Bend area in Angelina County to the Damascus Church to preach every Sunday. It was through the woods. There was no bridge at the river, so he went to the lowest place. Also some of the family went in wagons the same way. Steven James Havard was born July 16, 1845 and died November 23, 1923.
