In the Gallery: LEONID ANDREIVICH FOKIN (1930-1985) The son of a factory worker, Leonid Andreivich Fokin was born on July 9, 1930, in the town of Pavlograd in the Dnepropetrovsk region of the Ukraine. His formal art studies commenced at the Art School of the Moldavian Republic in Kishinev. He graduated in 1950 with a gold medal. His diploma work, The First Success, was reprinted in the Republican press. He next entered the Repin Academy of Art, graduating in 1956. A reproduction of his Repin Academy diploma work was printed in the Neva and Soviet Union magazines, where it was reviewed as one of the most interesting works of that time. From 1950 to 1956 he took a course of studies in the Repin Institute of Leningrad for painting, sculpture and architecture. His graduation project was The Uneasy Youth (1956) Upon graduation from the Institute, Fokin readily got involved in the creative life of his country. He became a member of the Leningrad Artists Society in 1956, and every year thereafter his works were exhibited in various cities of the Soviet Union. His primary themes were young people of the Civil War (following the Russian Revolution), workers, scientists, farmers, Lenin and landscapes. He was awarded the Diploma of the First Grade from the Soviet Ministry of Culture for his work entitled, Troubled Youth. The artist borrowed plots for his feature paintings from everyday life. Labor enthusiasm of ordinary Soviet people belonging to the post-war generation appealed a great deal to him. His art works include The End of the Working Day, Olya, the Trade Union Leader, A Portrait of the Milkmaid Uetimenko, Hercules of Izhora and The Steel-Rolling Foreman of the Izhora Mills. The artist is distinguished by his brilliant composition skills. his characters easily interact with the spectator passing on the optimistic spirit of their epoch, now thought as historical. A master of portrait painting, he captured the individuality of his contemporaries, and his landscapes convey the beauty of Russia, Moldavia and the Ukraine. Both portraits and landscapes have been included in exhibitions in the USA, Sweden, Japan and Germany. Many of his works have been acquired by private galleries in Japan, France, Turkey, England and Germany. The genre of landscape is also the source of inspiration and fascination for the artist who frequently combines in the same painting a lyrical and epic principle, as in Before Thunderstorm, The Evening and Beginning of Spring. Since mid-1950s, Fokin had continually attended municipal, zonal, republican and national exhibitions. As a member of the Union of Artists, Fokin held his own personal exhibitions. His works are kept by museums and private collections both in Russia and abroad. Available Art Contact [email protected] for prices.
