In the News: Scots Vote No on Independence On Thursday, Scots took to the polls in record numbers in a referendum to determine the future of their country. The ballots contained just a single yes-no question, Should Scotland be an independent country? In the end, 55 percent responded No, meaning that Scotland will remain a part of the UK for the foreseeable future. Although outright independence was rejected, change is still on its way. In the lead-up to the vote, unionist parties promised Scotland greater autonomy, particularly on the issues of tax, spending, and welfare, should it remain a part of the UK.
