In the aftermath of 9/11, Bruce performed this song to open the Tribute to Heroes concert. It was not a song written for 9/11 but rather the downward spiral of Asbury Park, NJ. It didnt matter, the words all fit. The pain was measurable. Two years later, Bruce wrote The Rising. A tribute to the actions of the many heroes and victims who not only perished that fateful morning but to those they loved who were left behind. We didnt physically die that day, but a part of all of us did. In a sense, thats the easy part. Moving forward, paying honor and respect to the memories of those that did die...thats the hard part. Because day to day life gets in the way, living pushes sorrow aside, we seek to replace pain with passions, we get busy and we worry about our own shit and our own problems. That doesnt make us bad people, it doesnt make us less thoughtful, patriotic or American. But today is a day we must remember. Today is a day that must be talked about and shared; passed on to our children and remembered by the generations to come that will be tasked with trying to make sense of the world, the people who live in it and the commonality of faith and hope and love and peace that exists in our hearts.
