In the attached article Glenn Reynolds examines the new, increasingly stratified America. Is it the evil capitalists who have created this situation an America? Where social mobility seems to be less and less the norm? Nope. It’s the crony capitalists, with the help of their underlings in government and academia, a group which Reynolds calls the “clericy.” (I call them junior varsity cronies, but “clericy” is better.) It is this conglomeration of business, other special interests, and government which is destroying opportunity for the everyday person in this country. As in the days of old, the “nobles” and the priests again control the show and make life difficult for everyone else. Consider for a moment if you just wanted to start fresh. People used to do that all the time in this country. They’d pack up and head out West. There was a place to run to. A place where a man (or woman) could carve out a living without the overlords breathing down his neck. Those days are gone. There is no running from the oligarchs now. There is no room to breathe. Ask yourself how much you personally are taxed each year and whether that money would have been better served working for your family and your immediate community. Our taxes go to waging wars in distant lands where our neighbors die and go insane while defense contractors make millions and even billions. They go to bailouts of banks which then turn around and foreclose on taxpayers. They go to subsidies for other wealthy corporations and to lavish pensions and health plans for government workers of all sorts, and so on. The middle class, the privately employed, producing, core of America is being hollowed out by the oligarchs and clericy. Add in a Federal Reserve which is undermining the middle class by creating inflation (largely for the benefit of the ruling class) while wages continue to decline, and it is fair to say that most Americans have seen better times.
