In the bible Jesus uses parables to teach us lessons about how to live godly lives and do what is right. In Matthew 20 He is explaining to the people about the Kingdom of Heaven. In this parable the householder went out to hire workers for his vineyard. The first set of workers were hired and a set price was agreed upon. The householder went out several more times during the day and hired more workers but no set price was agreed upon; he only promised to pay them what was right. At the end of the day the householder called all the workers in from the field so they could receive their pay, starting with those who were hired last. The owner paid all the workers the same amount, no matter what time of day they were hired. Of course this upset the workers who were hired first and had worked the longest. They felt they should have received more because they had borne more of the burden and suffered more than those who came later. But the householder told them that he would give to the last the same as he gives to the first. The householder in this parable is God, the world is his vineyard, and we are the workers. God has a plan and a purpose for all of us and we receive our payment based on fulfilling that plan and purpose. Some people are created for a purpose that will take many years to complete and they will live a long time. Some people are created for a purpose that will take only a short time to fulfill and they will live for only a short time. It is not up to us to decide how long we are here on this earth; that decision rests solely in the hands of God. John the Baptist was given the task of being God’s messenger to prepare the way for Jesus (Mark 1:2-3). Once he did that we see John being beheaded and dying (Matthew 14:8-12). John the Baptist’s purpose was fulfilled once Jesus began his earthly ministry and he no longer had to remain on earth. God knows what He created us to do and He knows how long it will take. I am encouraging you to take comfort in knowing that God knows what He is doing and that His plan for you is a good one and designed to bring you to a good end. Be Blessed!
