In the category of My Georgia Coast Memories, the recent discussions here about cast nets launched a flood of memories for me. Does anyone remember the Thursday Night fish suppers at Maxwellton Plantation? This 50 year tradition was an inclusive event with folks from every coastal county in attendance. Often, a team was dispatched early to catch the mullet, kill the squirrels, butcher the hog or goat, kill the deer, or whatever was on the menu. These suppers were an excuse to meet, share stories, drink a little, and visit our neighbors from neighboring counties. Occasionally there would be five or six sheriffs from surrounding counties, a congressman or two, and the governor from time to time. I had the privilege of seeing and experiencing this family tradition from early childhood to my much older years. The shed and stove still stands where all this began (during my grandfathers era), and ended with my fathers. Many notable events took place at these gatherings, to include Erk Russells first (out of Statesboro) fundraiser to restart football at Georgia Southern. Dr. Dale Lick was introduced to Glenn Bryant for a contribution that resulted in Glenn Bryant Field at Paulsen Stadium.
