In the face of the Ebola threats, what can/should we as citizens do to keep safe? Good question. Most domestic airlines are reasonably safe as are many of the major foreign flag airlines. Nevertheless all carriers should be screening out passengers who are sick or who appear sick. Cleanliness is a good practice anywhere and anytime. I would carry along packets of the chemical hand wipes. If we use the airliner lavatory, wash our hands and then reclean using the wipes. I would not travel to West Africa until things improve there, but if travel is unavoidable, take as many precautions as you can. Upgrade to First Class if you can. Avoid airline meals unless you can be sure they are safe and sanitary. Practice good hygiene everywhere you go. Most other destinations are probably safe, but hygiene is a good practice anywhere. Get checkups and stay current on immunizations. Healthy people are far less likely to be infected. Finally, educate yourself on this and any other health risks.
