In the grand and wonderful scale of music documentaries -- including this years Twenty Feet From Stardom, Sound City and older greats like ANVIL -- I have to say that FOLK, my new documentary, is a small film. Theres not a celebrity in sight. Theres no reminiscing about the glory days -- and nope, theres probably not a single song that youll recognize when you hear it. What you will find in FOLK is an intimate story about indie artists, committed with all their hearts to making great music -- even though they havent been validated by the mainstream. They face challenges that we all face, or have faced -- including finances, relationship difficulties, learning how to compromise and when not to give up. I came to this film with the conviction that OUR lives and the way we live them matter deeply in this world, that OUR stories are the ones we learn the most from -- and that singer-songwriters play a critical role in helping us see who we are, and where were going. As the wonderfully talented Raina Rose says in FOLK, Songs used to be the way people remembered their histories. Now its the way they figure out their futures. Ive heard from some festival programmers that music docs without celebrities in them wont sell tickets; Ive heard from distributors that films about unknown artists are a hard sell. Its why Im particularly proud, and very appreciative, that Thom Powers of DOC NYC and Cliff Froehlich of the St Louis International Film Festival have both chosen FOLK to screen at their festivals in less than two weeks. I hope in this crazy pressured world, so often measured in celebrity moments, that youll find the time to come see FOLK. I think youll leave the film with a greater sense of connectedness, a huge respect for what it takes to be an indie artist -- and oh yeah, some singer-songwriters whose music youll be humming as you head out the door. I guarantee that youll remember the song Company of Friends, by Danny Schmidt, for a long time to come.
