"In the last 50 years, the continent (Africa) has received $1 trillion in benevolent aid. Country by country, Africans are far worse off today than they were half a century ago. -- In Haiti, prior to the devastating earthquake, "$8.3 billion in foreign aid flowed into Haiti. Yet the country has ended up 25% poorer than before the aid began." - Robert Lupton from Toxic Charity. This should make you question the way that global aid is done. On a macro level and even on a micro level. I know it may seem that pouring money and time into an underdeveloped country is a good thing no matter what.. but there will always be ways to do things that provide long lasting help, and ways that are actually toxic to the receiver of the aid. It may even require us to not feel as good about ourselves for doing it.
