In the last decade, biomimicry has risen to prominence in the world of technology. It has become so important that a word was even made up for the combination of biology and robotic, bionics. Bionics is the study of how humans and animals complete certain tasks and transferring the discoveries to technology. Many revolutionary inventions have been due to the use of biomimicry. Some examples are Velcro, which was based off of a plant, Sharklet, an antibacterial material based off of shark skin, and airplanes, with wings based off of that of birds. One such invention is the FinGripper. The FinGripper is a bionic attachment created by Festo. It is used in automation, or the machines that mass produce products. The FinGripper was inspired by fish tails. If a fish tail is pressed, the tail doesn’t curl out, instead, it curls in on whatever is pushing it. This simple feature allows fish to swim with a lot more ease than they would without it. It’s use of bone structure was transferred into the FinGripper by Festo. The FinGripper is made of two flexible plastic pieces connected by hard plastic pieces joined in such a way that it works like a fish tail. Because of the fish tail feature, the FinGripper is able to surround an object without crushing it, a huge improvement from conventional grasping devices. This bionic allows fragile items such as lightbulbs, chocolates, and eggs to be picked up without their destructions. festo/cms/en_corp/9779.htm https://youtube/watch?v=a1Uo-Wp4kjo
