In the late 19th century, National Biscuit Company, popularly known as Nabisco, began making Animal Crackers. The now-famous cookie box with a string was conceived in time for the Christmas season of 1902. The cookies in their new packaging were an instant hit and hanging the boxes on the Christmas tree quickly became a holiday tradition. In honor of this Gilded Age tradition, the Museum will give away a box of Animal Crackers to every visitor at the Annual Tree Lighting on Sunday, December 1.
