In the mid-90s, Star Control II totally blew me away when it came to PC games. You were the captain of an alien starship, traveling to other solar systems in the Milky Way Galaxy, forging alliances with different alien species in order to stop this other alien race from committing mass genocide. Upon befriending an alien species, you gained the ability to purchase that species ships for your starfleet. Each ship had characteristics representative of their species. For example, the Spathi, a really cowardly species, had a ship that was really fast, had absolutely terrible attack, but weak rear-firing missles to attack pursuers. Best part, was that actual ship-to-ship combat was a part of the game (unlike another similar space game that came out not too long ago) and you could even enter this multiplayer mode, create different fleets and blow each other up. Anyway, Star Control II also had really awesome music. Heres the hyperspace theme, which should most certainly be obscure enough for this group:
