In the midst of campaigning I still have to provide professional services which can be demanding yet rewarding. Last Thursday I defended a man on criminal charges before a jury. At the end of the trial I challenged the jury to not only declare him not guilty in their verdict. I asked them to declare him innocent. The jury was out less than ten minutes. I think it was seven or eight minutes. My old record was fourteen minutes for a not guilty. I have done so many of these jury trials I have lost count. But this fact never changes: we are an incredibly privileged nation that our Constitution guarantees that fellow citizens will sit in judgment, not the government. As I tell jurors every time I stand before them: Today you are the law. I look forward to offering my skills of persuasion on behalf of all of us in the House of Representatives next year.
