In the moment of sunrise today, I sat in the canoe and watched the sky brighten on the northeastern horizon, the sun break forth over the horizon, and the day begin. I was struck by how I often talk of this as a moment - the sunrise. But it is more than that. The sky and world around me are changing so rapidly in that “moment” that perhaps it is more like a multitude of distinctive small moments each one gently melding into the next. Or, maybe it is true to speak of it as one moment, for is it not what transpires prior and proceeds after that gives meaning to the present? In any case, it was awesome to behold. I think, perhaps, the moment, or small moments, of sunrise can be a metaphor for life.
