In the news today, ABC fired the orchestra of Dancing With the Stars, 28 players/arrangers in lieu of canned music and a small electronic band to attract a younger viewer demographic. Advertisers also paid approximately four million for a 30-second ad on a television program where some players quite literally have the mission of hurting another (dont argue with me on this...I heard first hand this week an analyst talking about the value of crippling the first string quarterback). A friend far more aware than I estimated individual band member salaries at approximately $2200 an episode at 10 weeks a season, so were talking about ABC saving $616,000 a season. No small change, to be sure...though I do think its worth pointing out its 4.6 seconds of ad money from the Superbowl (or 1/406th of the budgets of The Lone Ranger, or John Carter...two movies produced by the Mouse you probably didnt see).
