In the nineteenth century, early computing machines were called difference engines. That is a great metaphor for our minds, which are exquisitely sensitive to noticing differences between one thing or another. It is that power that also allows us to declare that some things are the same. The trouble is that some differences make a difference and some differences do not. Knowing the meaning of differences is what makes us like God. This is a spiritual power that comes to us from above, from the hand of God fashioning us at conception, not from below, from the genetic code or the complexity of the body. The difference between us and all other animals and machines makes all the difference in the world!
